The junior A Nanaimo Timbermen have matched last year’s win total already, and there’s a lot of lacrosse still to be played.

The city’s B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League team won its second straight game on Saturday, defeating the Delta Islanders 10-7, before losing to the Coquitlam Adanacs 10-6 the following afternoon. Both games were played at Frank Crane Arena.

“Very, very happy with how the boys have played and the way they’re progressing, more importantly,” said Dave Bremner, the team’s coach. “A two-game win streak was, some people thought, unachievable for this team, but as coaches, we believed in them.”

Saturday’s victory was the first time the T-men have beaten the Isles since the 2014 campaign, but Bremner said his team went into the contest feeling like it was a winnable game.

“We outchanced them in many areas and there was some areas … that we definitely could have tightened up on and maybe increased the goal line,” the coach said.

Pascal Coombs led Nanaimo’s offence in the win with a hat trick, Adam Golia had two goals and two assists and Nolan Morrison also had a two-goal game. Daryl DeFreitas, Jake Mickelson and Cody Clark also scored and Darian Claxton made 35 saves for the win as shots were 44-42 in favour of the home team.

Sunday’s game was 5-5 in the early stages of the second period before the Adanacs pulled away.

Coombs had two goals and two assists to lead Nanaimo and other scorers were Golia, Mickelson, Tyson Black and Liam Young. Claxton made 42 saves as the T-men were outshot 52-38.

GAME ON … The junior A Timbermen host the Burnaby Lakers on Saturday (May 20) at 4:30 p.m. at Frank Crane Arena, then visit the Port Coquitlam Saints the following day.
